Wellness vs. Illness

from author Joyce Sunada

At the end of every semester, whether I was teaching or learning, I’ve developed depression and a stress rash, and sometimes a seized-up back. I recall laying on the floor at Christmas because it hurt to move. Not only does illness related to the hard stop at the end of a semester destress me, it concerns my family and friends, too.

This semester I am crafting a plan to have a wellness week at the end of the semester so I stay busy with joyful things and, I hope, avoid that hard stop that feels like a car crash. So far, my plans are:

  • Dec. 6th, haircut at a new salon
  • Dec. 9th, create a list of people I want to send holiday cards to. Also, I’m hoping to make an appointment to visit the Cat Cafe, but December isn’t open for scheduling yet.
  • Dec. 11th, choose five books from my TBR pile in the closet and five from my e-devices to read. I love choosing books, even if I don’t get around to reading them.
  • Dec 12th, get a pedicure
  • Dec 13th, a Friday the 13th! Meeting with my horror book club and then watching a spooky movie.
