I’ve been thinking lately about how I should continue to improve my interpreting skills over the summer break. In the fall, I’ll be taking Interpreting 3 and Interactive Interpreting, so I want to make sure I don’t arrive in August with an obvious backslide. Here are some regular plans I’ve developed and workshops I’m registered to attend:

• Continue taking the maximum three Sorenson Synergy workshops each month.
• Continue with the Dynamic Voicing series hosted by The Willow Tree Project. The sessions remaining will cover prosody, fingerspelling, and constructed dialogue.
• A workshop about ethics.
• Intersection of Ethics with Gender, Sexuality, and Relationship Diversity workshop.
• A workshop called Interpreting for Diverse Relationship Dynamics.
• A series called Promoting Equity in Healthcare Interpreting, hosted by Gallaudet University and Idaho State University. The series runs for almost a full year, covering different aspects of healthcare interpreting.
• A month-long interpreter training hosted by CATIE’s Level Up team called Spoken Language and Sign Language Interpreting in Healthcare Settings.
• Deliberate Practice for Deliberate Results, a workshop about how to improve your own skills as an interpreting in a deliberate way.
• Meeting every other week with my mentor to discuss video samples I’ve sent her.
• Interpreting almost weekly in a religious environment.
• Attending every local Deaf event.
• A workshop hosted by Cindy Wood about setting boundaries and having healthy work-life balance in interpreting.
• Doing a daily ethics scenario exercise from the book Encounters with Reality: 1,001 Interpreter Scenarios, 2nd ed., by Brenda E. Cartwright.
